Before I started this magazine I had a Danish magazine together with my mom called “Kreativ Livsstil Magasin” (Creative Lifestyle Magazine) which was full of inspiration. To carry the legacy on and to hopefully give you a sense of where I am coming from and who I am, I have decided to share the 6 of them with you here.
My very first magazine
My mother had asked me if maybe we could ideate together on a book she wanted to create, where she could pass on some of her knowledge, share her works and creative lifestory. For her birthday I gave her a weekend trip to Hotel Skanderborghus where we could immerse in the topic. As always we bought some magazines for inspiration. Little did we know they would inspire us to make our own magazine instead of a book.
We made the first magazine in 2017 while I was still working in a nursery and my mom was still working as a creative teacher. We spend our summer holiday creating it and as we had decided to publish it in the fall and only publish 1-2 magazines every year, we wanted to incorporate some Christmas inspiration. We had a lot of fun making Christmas decorations in the middle of summer and luckily we also had some help from those around us, who found our project exciting.
I’m not going to translate the whole Magazine but I will however try to translate the “introduction” so you can get a sense of where we were at, and our intentions:
What does it mean to be Creative?
There are many perceptions of the word creativity.
Some associate it especially with handicrafts – to be creative is to be “crafty” in the old-fashioned way. We’re talking about felt, knitted socks and pot holders, patchwork quilted pillows and gnomes.
There is nothing wrong with that.
We own knitted potholders and socks that are made with love and which we happily use – but creativity is so much more. To us, being creative means charging…
To nourish oneself. It is thinking differently. To be innovative. To create something. To get new ideas. Finding new paths when the one you follow is blocked.
It is inspiring and surrounding yourself with things and people that bring joy, warmth and love. To love something. To work with something and someone.
We know we need to be creative. We believe that everyone needs to be creative in their own way.
We like to surround ourselves with things that brings soul to a room. It is important to us when we decorate, that what we use has a story, a meaning, an expression and that it links to something else in the space. In this way, you get interaction and a feeling of life in all corners. The more history and meaning, the more personal and alive your home becomes.
The home is just one of the aspects we think is important to be aware of in a creative life.
It is also about not being limited by norms and rules. Being creative is not something you should be allowed to do or steal time for. For us, it is a human right. It’s what gives you the energy to do all the boring things that also needs to be done.
Everyone is nourished by creativity. Everyone has their own way of being creative.
It may be painting, drawing, photography, sewing, designing and creating art in various forms. It can also be planting a flower, spending time creating a delicious lunch, going for a walk in beautiful surroundings, finding new inspiration and planning something away from everyday life.
Solving something that currently seems impossible – if the bank says no, you have too little space or otherwise encounter resistance.
Therefore, Creative Lifestyle embraces much of what we think gives life meaning and of which we would like to have even more.
Creativity is,
…love for something, to love something – a person, a word, a picture, a thought, the country or humanity – so much that one can accomplish anything with this abundance”
Women Who Run With Wolves, C. P. Estes
We want to be nourished. We want to be creative. And we want to share it with you.
I hope you enjoyed having a look at Creative Lifestyle Magazine number 1 and reading a bit about creativity… What is creativity to you?
